The definition alone can almost paralyze me: 1) a compulsory contribution to state revenue, levied by the government on workers’ income and business profits or added to the cost of some goods, services and transactions. Stop me now – because reading this causes me to feel a TAX: 2) A strain or heavy demand. Who knew such a small word could suck the life right out of a girl?
I know it’s coming every year and at the same time. But for survival purposes I push through for about a month and then lock up the fear until absolute necessary the following year. It was the same story for the past 15 years. I freak out for about a month to make sure I have all the necessary paperwork. I go to sleep thinking about taxes, dream about taxes, punch infinite amount of numbers into my Quickbooks (not really that quick), all the while I relive almost every transaction we made. And every year we walk out of the accountant’s office thankful I made it through another season.
The life in agriculture is unlike anything. Planning can be difficult, expenses can come out of no-where, and feeling like we have a handle on it can change with the changing of the season. But it always works out. We know how to push through. We know that bad times don’t last and good times are right around the corner.
So – this season I urge you to not let your fear paralyze you. Continue to dig deep and reflect on why you do what you do. Remember the daily blessings agriculture gives you and your family. Remember to breathe and this too shall pass.
