So, a couple of weeks ago I was really on a roll. Work was getting done in all directions and I really was in the zone. Then it happened.
I was throwing corn bags and I pulled my back. Bad. I mean REALLY bad. Ibuprofen didn’t help. The chiropractor didn’t help. Drugs didn’t help. And it shut me down. For 10 days. And it was a mental defeat, not just a physical beak-down. But it was just temporary. Just like a flat tire…just temporary.
The thing is, there are always important things going on in our life. We were in the middle of planting and I didn’t feel I had time to be hurt. Timeliness is so important and I didn’t feel I had time to take care of myself. But that was the furthest from the truth.
Note: Just because we think something, doesn’t make it true.
The truth is, so many times we react to something based on emotion. When you come from a negative place (such as feeling helpless) the result usually won’t be what you what. But when you can step outside of yourself and manage your mind, it puts you back in the driver’s seat. Helplessness makes you a victim. I know that’s not going help me.
So, I chose to accept my circumstance of hurting my back. I accepted it with as much grace as I could and focused on other things I could be doing (like writing and editing) and it was ok. The planting still got done, the sky didn’t fall, and I was able to come out on the other side in a much happier state than I could have otherwise.
What is it that stops you up in your life? What gives you that flat tire and brings things to a halt? What is it that you just can’t shake?
Know this: You get to choose how you want to feel.
We don’t choose our circumstances (like my back) but you get to choose how you want to feel about them. This is powerful and it puts you back in charge of you.
I’m sure glad I know how to change a flat!
