I’m so tired I can almost sleep standing up…
Without a wall…
In the middle of the day…
Outside in a 50 mph wind…
With the kids yelling at me.
I get it. Sometimes I daydream about those fantasy jobs where I could work 8-5 and come home and put my feet up on a nice comfy couch with a nice ice cold beverage in my hand and call it a day. And then those weekends…those free do anything you want weekends… I can almost feel it.
And then I wake up. Monday, Friday, Saturday… they are pretty much the same. We’ve been busting our butt working because it’s time. Whether it’s calving, planting, harvesting, or what-ever your big event going on…it’s time. Prop those beautiful eyelids open with toothpicks, make a stiff cup of coffee, and keep pushing through.
While you are doing this remember – you are living the dream. We don’t work the earth or raise animals because it’s easy. We do it because we have a need to feel connected to the earth. There is an unexplainable satisfaction that comes from a harvest or the birth of an animal. This cannot be measured or bottled; it cannot be bought or sold. It’s bigger than us and it’s at our fingertips. Right, this very minute.
So the next time you take a nap standing up, remember that you are in the dream. Whether you are awake or not.
