What the hell was I thinking?

This past week we were awoken in the middle of the night by a tornado warning.  This is not the first time we have been through this.  8 years ago a big tornado system composed of  22 tornados came for a visit.  We’ve seen several from afar, but this system made a turn and stopped by the McDaniel Landing Strip for a visit.

I remember standing in our den that has 6 3×6 windows in it.  The wind hit 146 mph.  The windows were bulging in and out.  Almost like an accordion. I’d never seen anything like this before.

Then it went silent.  It was scary.  I was just standing there paralyzed by intrigue and fear.  And time stopped for just a moment.

It came, it damaged, it left.

We’ve been through several storms since then, but nothing that compared to that one.

Then comes this week.  Our son wakes us up as he gets a tornado warning on his phone. The winds were whipping and it was complete darkness except for the shots of lightning illuminating the sky.  We all get up and make a plan to go to the basement.

Then comes the mind games.  This is where things get weird.

“I HAVE NO CLEAN JEANS!”  Yep, that’s what my first random thought was.  I haven’t had time to do laundry and I have no clean jeans.

We get to the basement then my next thought is “I DON’T HAVE MY MUD BOOTS.”  If any of you have ever seen Keeping Up with the Jones’ you will know exactly how I felt in that moment.  Filled with crazy – do I take the onion, peppercorn, or the trail-mix?

I’m sure I probably was reliving my mother telling me to always wear clean underwear in case I get in an accident.  I sure wouldn’t want that.  I sure wouldn’t want people to talk about my dirty clothes.

I was able to laugh at myself the next day.  “What the hell was I thinking?” But in all reality how many of us live our lives that way?

We think – we feel – we act- we get results.  But when you aren’t questioning what you are doing, that’s when life can get a little crazy.  The WHY is everything if you feel the desire to want to live a better life.  It is the ticket to freedom if you take the time to just do a little digging.  Not in a judging or critical way, but in a Curious George manner.

Give it a try.  Question one thing you’ve thought or done today that no longer works for you.  Ask yourself why – answer the question – then ask yourself why again.  See where it takes you.  Could be kind of fun to find out something new/old about yourself.
